Reagan, In his own hand

July 18, 2009

One of the things I’ve been meaning to write about is this excellent book, “Reagan, In his own hand”  One of the typical tactics of the left is to complain that all classic liberals are stupid or that their solutions are too ‘simplistic’ to work in the real world.  Nevermind that their solutions keep proving to not work over time, but more on that some other day..

When Reagan was President, we heard endless stories in the press about how he was simply a puppet that wasn’t smart enough to have created his own misguided agenda.  A key bit of information in the battle to refute this bit of propoganda was the release of this book.   Between 1975 and 1979, Reagan gave over 600 radio addresses that effectively described his beliefs, the problems of the world and his solutions to those problems.  Along the way one also has one of the most effective, practical defenses of Classical Liberalism one could ever hope to find.  Far from being outdated, these addresses remain relevant and powerful.  I couldn’t suggest a better primer on some of the most important tenents of practical classical liberalism than this book.

The  Hoover Institute has several of essays online at this link:

reading them is highly recommended, although the book has many more – ones that I consider to be better than the ones included there.
